This Alberta insurance license guide goes over everything you want to know about how to get your license, Alberta insurance exams, and how the whole process works from start to finish.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

This guide will cover everything you need to know about Alberta insurance licensing and being an insurance broker in Alberta. Throughout this guide, you will see links (in RED) to other resources that will provide you with more details on those topics.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for here or using the links below, you can do a quick search of our website or visit our PNC Learning FAQ page.

WHAT IS AIC?

AIC stands for Alberta Insurance Council and they are an independent body responsible for protecting the public through licensing and regulation of insurance brokers and adjusters in Alberta.

ALBERTA INSURANCE LICENSE LEVELS

ALBERTA INSURANCE LICENSE LEVEL 1

This is the entry level license that everyone starts with if you want to sell home, car, business, or travel insurance in Alberta. To get it, you follow a very simple 4 step process:

Step 1) Study our Alberta Level 1 course which takes approximately 3-4 weeks.

Step 2) Once you complete our course, you’ll receive a GLQP certification which allows you to register for the provincial exam administered by the AIC.

Step 3) Pass the Alberta insurance level 1 license exam

Step 4) Apply for your Level 1 broker license and apply for work. Your employer will sponsor your Alberta insurance council licensing application.

Now you have met your Alberta insurance council licensing requirements and can work as a general broker in the province. All levels after this are optional but nice to have if you want to advance your career.

ALBERTA INSURANCE LICENSE LEVEL 2

After you get your Level 1, you can start to consider your Level 2 which will allow you to work independently without supervision from a Level 2 or 3 broker and get a higher salary.

The steps are the same as Level 1 in that you study the Alberta Level 2 course, pass the Level 2 exam, and complete your application form.

ALBERTA GENERAL INSURANCE LEVEL 3

This license allows you to run or own your own insurance brokerage as a Designated Representative who is responsible for managing brokers below you.

To prepare for this exam, you will need to study the Alberta Level 3 course.

EXAM FEES

The AIC exam fees are quite reasonable compared to other provinces only costing $50 per attempt but I also recommend reviewing our Alberta licensing cost guide for a more detailed breakdown of the total cost of licensing.

ALBERTA INSURANCE LICENSE RENEWAL

Once you have passed your exam and completed the application paperwork, you need to take certain actions to maintain your license each year to ensure you meet the renewal requirements.

First, you will need to make sure you meet the AIC continuing education requirements prior to your renewal date. You need to earn at least 15 credit hours between July 1st and June 30th.

After that, you can process your renewal through the AIC licensing portal and pay the Alberta insurance council license renewal fee of $25 (new license applications are $95).
