Since the RIBO exam is a bit different from the Fundamentals & CAIB exams, I figured it was worth writing a post about what the difference is and hopefully give you guys some helpful information.

In the province of Ontario, the first level of insurance license is called the RIBO 1 license.  To get it, you have to pass the RIBO Level 1 exam.  Getting this license means you are qualified to be an insurance broker in the province of Ontario.

RIBO EXAM FORMAT

The exam is out of 100 marks and you need 75% in order to pass.  There are 90 multiple choice questions and 1 short answer case study question.  The case study is worth 10 marks and each MC question is worth 1 mark.

Like the other exams, you have 3 hours to write it and a booklet containing policy wordings will be provided for you.

EXAM CONTENTS

The exam is made up of primarily personal lines questions with some basic commercial lines questions.  When studying, be sure to focus on the commonly seen habitational insurance forms (homeowners, tenants, condo, etc), automobile insurance and some sections on travel insurance.

On the exam, you can expect that 47% of the content will be on general insurance knowledge: types of insurers, classes of insurance, meanings of insurance terms, parts of insurance contracts, RIB Act/By-laws, etc.

Roughly 18% will be on habitational insurance: liability, fire & EC, homeowner’s insurance, vacancy permits, etc.

20% of your exam will be on automobile insurance, covering topics such as OAP1, OPF2 & OPF 6.

And the last 10% of the exam will be the case study.
