Insurance is a great career and of all of the provinces in Canada, Alberta insurance brokers have higher salaries than the rest of Canada. But if you want to become an insurance broker or insurance agent in the province of Alberta, you will first need to pass the Alberta General Insurance Level 1 exam.
WHAT IS ON THE ALBERTA GENERAL INSURANCE LEVEL 1 EXAM?
This exam covers a variety of insurance topics you’ll need to know in order to become a successful insurance broker. While there’s a lot more to learn on the job or to upgrade your license, the stuff you’ll learn for the exam will cover the basics.
You will be a tested on a variety of topics including: how insurance works, contract law, government regulations, risk management, property insurance (personal and commercial), bonds, legal liability, legal liability insurance, farm, marine & aviation insurance, accident and sickness/travel insurance, and automobile insurance.
HOW IS THE EXAM FORMATTED?
The exam is 100 questions multiple choice and you need a 70% to achieve a passing grade on the exam. They give you 2 hours to write it.
Roughly 60% of the exam is focused on Technical Skills and Risk Management, 20% on Ethics and Professionalism, and 20% on Industry Knowledge.
With Technical Skills & Risk Management, they make up 60% of the exam and therefore 60 questions. Here is an approximate breakdown:

- 12 Automobile Questions
- 1 Travel
- 2 Accident & Sickness
- 15 Risk Management
WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME ON EXAM DAY?
You don’t need to bring anything except some form of government identification such as a passport, drivers license, etc. You do not need to bring any calculators or pencils as the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) will provide those for you.

ALBERTA GLQP CERTIFICATION
As of January 1st, 2020, you will need to take a course with an Approved Education Provider and get certified by that institution before you can write the exam. PNC Learning is an approved GLQP Education Provider.
